Lot # :  116 Plot # :  6 Gender:  M Birth Name:
Born:  Mar. 2, 1825 Died:  Jan. 20, 1905 Burial Date:  Jan. 21, 1905
Ledger Notes:    Age:  79 Yrs., 10 Mos., 20 Days         Nativity:  Tennessee
Notes:  Oregon Pioneer of 1853   Son of Henry Tuckness and Sarah Sims     This is an unusual case where I am fairly confident the date on the monument is wrong and should indicate a birth year of 1825.  I am confident of the burial date and the age calculation in the ledger results in 1825.  In addition, multiple census years show him self-reporting his birth year as 1825.

Born:  14 Oct 1863 Died:  4 Jan 1865 Burial Date:  Jan. 24, 1865
Ledger Notes:    2 Yrs., 2 Mos., 27 Days        Nativity:  Oregon
Notes:  Possible Pioneer    The original ledger indicates a burial date of Jan. 24, 1863, which is clearly a recording error.  The Jan. 24 date may also be in error.
Family Contribution:  Daughter of Permelia (Baker) Tuckness and J.W. Tuckness. P. was sister of Endymian Baker, and J.W. was brother of Sarah (Tuckness) Baker. All crossed from Missouri in 1853 as part of the Baker Wagon Train with several brothers and families. It was likely that Sarah Tuckness was named for her aunt. In this case, Sarah Baker was Sarah Tuckness's both maternal and paternal aunt. (i.e., a Baker brother and sister married a Tuckness brother and sister).

Last Name:  Tuckness First:  Thomas Middle:
Lot # :  116 Plot # :  7 Gender:  M Birth Name:  Tuckness
Born:  1851 Died:  1851 Burial Date:
Ledger Notes:    Not recorded in the ledger.
Notes:   Son of James William and Permelia Tuckness   Burial is not recorded in the ledger, but is the oldest death date (1851) on any monument in the cemetery.  However, after much sleuthing with Stephen Baker, a relative of Permelia Baker Tuckness, who was Thomas' mother, we have arrived at the following conclusions.  Since the Baker family, who donated the cemetery, did not arrive in Oregon until 1853, it is likely that Thomas Tuckness was born, died, and buried in Missouri in 1851. The monument was probably produced either at the time of Sarah's death in 1865 or W.J.'s in 1866, and is similar to other stones from around those years. Perhaps because the plinth says "The children of J.W. & P. Tuckness", they decided at some point to add a memorial for Thomas to one of the panels even though he was not actually buried there. Thomas is on the West face where more weathering tends to occur, but it is still much less worn than his siblings. So I would say it was added a decade or more later, but not so much later to not be able to use the same stone engraver since the letters, and especially the numerals, are distinctively similar to the other siblings.
This is all speculation that might be able to be confirmed with research into the Missouri records if anyone wanted to pursue it, but the bottom line is that I doubt Thomas Tuckness ever actually made it to Oregon.
