Contribution of neighbor, Stephen Baker:
"The
family historian noted that the elder had a mill in
Wilsonville and settled in 1874. Listed in the 1880
census for Pleasant Hill. I believe that this is the
Bell for whom Bell Road is named. My family had stories
that a "Bell" organized building a road from present day
Wilsonville Road to Graham's Ferry Road to connect the
two and continued where it follows today to the
intersection of present-day Baker Road. My family
grumbled that Mr. Bell organized it, but the Bakers
donated the land and the labor -- but Bell got the
naming rights! The section up the canyon followed an
old Indian trail. The trail continued crossing the
Baker DLC and the "new" road was moved easterly to the
present day location which was at the edge of cleared
fields rather than running diagonally across the farm.
The Indian trail was a trading route between a
native settlement on the river near the mouth of Corral
Creek and where present-day Riverview Lane is located
(the river would flood the wetland, and as it receded,
many fish were left stranded and were easy to spear).
The natives' trail connected to the Chehalem/Tualatin
and Grande Ronde areas and tribes. As a boy growing up
on our farm, I hunted for and found numerous arrow heads
in the fields where this trail crossed. Additionally, I
have an anchor used by the natives for a canoe from the
Riverview Lane area that was picked up by Endymian Baker
upon his arrival in 1853 and when they wintered in a
Zumwalt cabin near the mouth of the creek." |
