The War Veterans - Conflict Study
There are veterans at this cemetery for the following wars:

War

War Dates

Blackhawk Wars 1830's
Civil War 1861-1865
Indian Wars 1855-1890
Spanish War 1898
World War I 1917-1918
World War II    1941-1945
Korean War 1950-1953

(While we recognize all our veterans on the cemetery website, this particular Eagle Scout project only encompasses veterans who served up through the Korean War.)

VETERAN RECOGNITION PROJECT
In an effort to accurately attribute our veterans' service to the conflict or era they served in we have been researching all our known veterans (170+).  The 15 remaining on this list are those for whom there is still significant question or lack of verification regarding their military service.

Everyone on this list appears either on the Cemetery Veterans List (CVL) or on the Sherwood American Legion (SAL) list, but since there have been significant errors on both those lists, we are looking for any additional evidence - either of military service generally or of the particular conflict they may have served in.  That evidence might include family knowledge, mention in an obituary, or inclusion in any of a number of military lists, many of which are searchable on-line.

The Notes column consists of notes regarding where our current research has hit a stumbling block.

HISTORICAL RESEARCH NOTES
In most wars the vast majority of soldiers in uniform were young men, between 18 and 30 years of age.  A small number of officers were older, in their 40’s and 50’s.  The Civil War and WW II had a much higher total percentage of men in service than other wars, so the age range tends to be wider for those conflicts.

Historical debate continues about the official dates for the Indian Wars, starting as early as 1812 in the East to 1890 in the West. The Blackhawk Wars referred to two different Indian conflicts, one in Illinois in the 1830’s and one in Utah in the 1870’s. All the individuals listed here should have been veterans in uniform, not civilian pioneers who may have been involved in isolated Indian conflicts.
